On Wednesday, October 12, Irish America celebrated the 19th Annual Wall Street 50 Awards Dinner at the Metropolitan Club in Manhattan. The Wall Street 50 recognizes the most exciting and innovative Irish American and Irish-born leaders in finance, profiled in the October / November 2016 issue of Irish America.

Daniel Keegan, co-head of Global Equities for Citigroup, delivered the keynote speech, a humble and funny talk that tied his own early academic struggle with the greater idea of teamwork on Wall Street, including his predecessor and mentor at Citi Rick Bartlett, and the Irish obligation to aid today’s immigrants.

Patricia Harty, co-founder and editor-in-chief of Irish America, and Niall O’Dowd, founding publisher, presented Keegan with the Keynote Speaker Award, a House of Waterford Crystal Lismore Essence Vase.

Waterford Crystal, one of the leading world brands in premium crystal, has been selected by the WPBSA to produce new trophies for the new World Snooker Home Nations series.

With 200 years of heritage, tradition and exquisite craftsmanship, Waterford Crystal already have a strong association with snooker. In 2004 they were responsible for the production of the unmistakable perpetual trophy for the Masters and more recently were entrusted with the design and production of the crystal presented at the Paul Hunter Classic.

The Home Nations series is new for the 2016/17 season, compromising the English Open, Northern Ireland Open, Scottish Open and Welsh Open tournaments. A new perpetual trophy has been commissioned for each tournament, with each to be named after a snooker legend hailing from that particular country.

The first unique piece, the Steve Davis Trophy, has already been produced and was presented to Liang Wenbo, the winner of the Coral English Open on 16 October 2016. The handmade trophy designed by Waterford Crystal designer Billy Briggs, features the Tudor Rose on its front representing the plant badge of England and also features the logo of the WPBSA.

WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson said: “As an aspirational world governing body it is paramount that we are able to provide trophies of the quality befitting the ever-increasing prestige of our tournaments. Waterford Crystal is renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail and once again have delivered something special for our players to play for.”

The House of Waterford Crystal, home of the iconic Waterford Crystal welcomed Ireland’s first luxury train, the Belmond Grand Hibernian to Waterford.

Belmond, a leading travel provider in the world of luxurious leisure experiences, including the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, had its inaugural visit to Waterford, with its new Grand Hibernian train. September 4th 2016 marked the Grand Hibernian’s maiden voyage to Waterford. Departing from Dublin, the luxury train travelled to major cities and attractions around Ireland including trips to Belfast, Dublin and Waterford City.

The Grand Hibernian carriages portray the epitome of luxury travel. The interior of the train was created using a combination of cutting edge technology and traditional craft skills in Dublin and was designed to reflect Dublin’s Georgian architecture with inspiration taken from the flora and fauna of Irish landscape. With a combination of classic and contemporary panelled walls matched with original artworks, antique mirrors and elegant colour schemes, the decor reflects Ireland’s cultural heritage with an indulgent, contemporary twist.

Sharon Murphy, House of Waterford Crystal and the Mayor of Waterford City and County, Cllr. Adam Wyse, welcomed the passengers to The House of Waterford Crystal. Guests were greeted with a Champagne toast at the House of Waterford Crystal Brand Experience before receiving a VIP tour of the factory to witness first-hand the unique craftsmanship involved in creating iconic Waterford Crystal.

The Belmond Grand Hibernian takes its name from the classical Latin word for Ireland, ‘Hibernian’ recalling the ancient Isle’s romance and culture. Passengers enjoy a whole new world of luxurious carriages, fine cuisine and attentive service, with a breath-taking backdrop of the ever-changing panoramas of Ireland’s celebrated scenic landscapes.

The designs of the carriages all feature Belmond Grand Hibernian’s Celtic knot weaved throughout in colours matching the tartan of the counties, with one carriage befittingly named Waterford.

The House of Waterford Crystal, home of the iconic Waterford Crystal was proud to be Associate Sponsor of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic which was held at the Aviva stadium in Dublin on September 3rd 2016.

Waterford designed and crafted two trophies for the game; the Keough-Naughton College Memorial Football Trophy and the Coach’s Award. Two teams from Boston College and Georgia Tech travelled to Dublin to compete for the trophies. The Georgia Tech captain Patrick Gamble was presented the Keough-Naughton trophy by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

The coach of Georgia Tech Paul Johnson collected the crystal Coach’s Helmet Award from David McCoy of House of Waterford Crystal. For over 60 years The House of Waterford Crystal has created bespoke trophies for multiple sporting events including the French and German Grand Prix, the golf Irish Open and the tennis Masters Series.

“From the initial design to the finished product, a significant amount of craftsmanship is required for us to create these unique sporting trophies” explains David McCoy, Sales & Marketing Director of House of Waterford Crystal. “Our ability to do this, is inherent in the heritage of our brand and is the reason why The House of Waterford Crystal is chosen to create these exclusive one off pieces and awards.” The Keough-Naughton College Football depicts an American football mounted on three individual sculpted pillars of crystal, resting on a beautiful base and plinth. The concept for the trophy is a ball in flight while the pillars represent the players’ arms catching the ball.

The Coach’s Award is a masterful replica of an American football helmet. The instantly recognisable shape, sparkle and quality reflect the unique craftsmanship of Waterford Crystal.

The organisers estimated that over 40,000 visitors arrived from USA and Europe for the game. Many of the fans who attended were also holidaying in Ireland, taking the opportunity to visit the House of Waterford Crystal and to experience the factory to see how the trophies were crafted for the event. The House of Waterford Crystal recently celebrated its 1 millionth visitor to its factory and brand experience in Waterford City.

Today, we welcomed our one millionth visitor, Gladys Aycock from North Carolina, USA!

Gladys who travelled to Waterford and Ireland Ancients East for the first time became our milestone visitor when she booked an escorted tour with Globus Luxury Tours.

Upon arriving at the House of the Waterford Crystal, the family was greeted with a VIP reception, led by the Mayor of Waterford City and County and our Sales & Marketing Director H.o.W.c David McCoy, before cutting a celebratory cake which was shared with visitors from across the world that joined the celebrations!

The VIP Experience included a personal tour of the factory, where Gladys got an opportunity to work with our master blowers and cutters manufacturing the World Famous Waterford Crystal. To mark the event, the team at Waterford Crystal manufactured a crystal key. The piece was crafted by Michael Murphy a Master Sculptor at the factory.

With this unique crystal key, Gladys will always be a VIP guest of Waterford Crystal. Gladys, said, “To be named Waterford Crystal’s one-millionth visitor was a wonderful surprise and it certainly made it a very memorable trip. From the moment we arrived, the impressive factory and brand experience, located by the Viking Triangle was a fantastic experience to enjoy Waterford in its home.

David McCoy  commented, “We take great pride in the many visitors from Ireland and abroad that travel to visit our factory and brand experience. Waterford Crystal is the worlds No I crystal brand and our experience offers an engaging and unique insight into the manufacturing process, which enables us to create these wonderful products. The Woodlands Waterway Marriott was the location for more than 2,500 food and wine lovers to sample delicious cuisine and hundreds of different wines, as chefs representing 60 restaurants competed for Wine & Food Week's Waterford Crystal Chef of Chefs award 2016.

Carlos Ramos, executive chef of Latin Bites, took top honors as the 2016 Waterford Crystal Chef of Chefs winner receiving a $5,000 cash and prize package and the coveted Waterford Crystal Trophy. The winning dish was an innovative Passion Fruit Ahi Tuna Tiradito.

 

Ronnie O'Sullivan showed why he is called Rocket as he earned a record-equalling sixth Masters title against Barry Hawkins 10-1 in the final at London's Alexandra Palace on Sunday.O'Sullivan won the exquisite Waterford Crystal trophy, that has become synonymous with the event over the course of the past decade.

In 2004 the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association commissioned Waterford Crystal to create a bespoke perpetual trophy for snooker’s most prestigious invitational event.

The team at Waterford, renowned for their quality of design and craftsmanship, worked to recreate the concept of a ‘nest of 15 snooker balls in a triangle, in an upright position’. The completed trophy stands at 12 inches tall, sitting on a two inch wooden plinth and weighs in at 9kg. It is sculpted from a solid block of highly polished leaded crystal and has become one of the most sought after trophies over the course of the past 13 seasons.

Matt Kehoe, head of design at Waterford said, “We enjoy the design challenge that a new trophy presents. The final trophy has a beautiful elegance, sparkle and stature, fitting for this great tournament”.Kenny McEvoy, Master Sculptor who sculpted the piece, said “Creating a beautiful piece like this, takes time and persistence, in order to ensure the final piece captures the likeness associated with this iconic shape”.

More recently, the WPBSA again commissioned Waterford to design a new trophy for the Paul Hunter Classic event in August 2015, which was won by Ali Carter at the tournament in Fuerth.

 

The biggest stars in entertainment stepped out for People’s Choice Awards 2016 and a number of them walked away with their own unique piece of Waterford Crystal.  Jane Lynch, star of CBS’ “Angel From Hell,” hosted the 42nd Annual People’s Choice Awards. After 200 million votes, these were the winners as voted on by the people.

The Trophy

Waterford Crystal, a brand synonymous with celebration, is the manufacturer of the 2016 People’s Choice Awards. Designed and hand-cut by Waterford artisans at the House of Waterford Crystal factory in Ireland. These bespoke crystal trophies will take pride of place, in the home of each of the talented winners.

 

 

Weighing 10 pounds and measuring 14 inches high, the award features small upright cuts on the base, which create the light refraction that Waterford is best known for. The large centre wedge cuts on both sides of the "top part of the award" are exceptionally deep, showing the extreme thickness and clarity of the crystal. The design reflects Waterford Crystals manufacturing and design prowess, in creating timeless, elegant and modern pieces of Waterford Crystal for the stars of "the World of Entertainment".

 

The Winners

Furious 7 raced ahead of the competition to win the coveted titles of “Favorite Movie” and “Favorite Action Movie.” Meanwhile, Sandra Bullock took home “Favorite Movie Actress,” and Johnny Depp was crowned “Favorite Dramatic Movie Actor.”

Longtime network and cable stalwarts dominated the TV categories. The Big Bang Theory took home top honors for “Favorite TV Show.” The CBS sitcom also won “Favorite Network TV Comedy” for the fourth consecutive year, and star Jim Parsons walked away with “Favorite Comedic TV Actor.” On the dramatic front, Grey’s Anatomy bested fellow ShondaLand shows to win “Favorite Network TV Drama,” with leading lady Ellen Pompeo landing “Favorite Dramatic TV Actress.” In cable, Homeland andPretty Little Liars each received accolades from fans.

Taylor Swift was the big winner in music, picking up “Favorite Female Artist” and beating out her pal Ed Sheeran for the title of “Favorite Pop Artist.” No need to feel too bad for Sheeran though, the singer was the people’s pick for “Favorite Male Artist.”

Meanwhile, Britney Spears proved she’s a force to be reckoned with on social media. The singer shot ahead of fellow nominees Anna Kendrick, Beyoncé, Dwayne Johnson, and Taylor Swift — not to mention all their followers! — to win the brand-new People’s Choice Awards category, “Favorite Social Media Celebrity.”

The most-triumphant winner of the night however, might just be Ellen DeGeneres. The “Favorite Humanitarian” honoree walked away with “Favorite Daytime TV Host,” effectively breaking the all-time win record with an astounding 17 People’s Choice Awards to her name.
