The latest news from the House of Waterford Crystal....

House of Waterford Crystal has a very special addition to its already abundant collection.

A spectacular crystal sword has been produced by the team of our master craftsman in our manufacturing facility in Ireland.

The idea was first conceived by the master sculptor Michael Murphy. Master sculptor Kenneth McEvoy prepared a drawing of the crystal sword, with some intricate and original touches.

One of them, the black crystal stone, which is elegantly placed at the top of the handle, is a unique feature. Even though giving a perception of being black, in reality it is actually evergreen – the darkest shade of green – with tiny golden sparkling stars in it, which were added during the production of the precious stone. The handle is ornately cut, simulating the medieval design of leather wrapping.

The sword itself is firmly lodged into the finely polished, black Kilkenny granite under a 60 degree angle.

The creation of this magnificent piece took over five weeks to create.

The culinary expertise of Ireland’s favourite celebrity chef Neven Maguire was on hand at a cookery demonstration on September 12th. The House of Waterford Crystal provided a fabulous setting for the night. The event was held in conjunction with the Waterford Harvest Festival, with proceeds going to the Waterford Hospice.

Guests were treated to wine and canapés on arrival, inspired by Neven and produced by the WIT Culinary School.

Neven showed how easy it is to produce quality dishes using simple ingredients and fresh produce, highlighting to all present the importance of buying and using local and Irish produce where possible.  He created a stout-Braised Shoulder of Pork with Apple and Potato Puree, a classic Tiramisu and demonstrated how to make spun sugar baskets, getting two members of the audience to give it a try!

With prizes during the evening that included a meal in McNeans House and Restaurant (Neven’s own restaurant) and Waterford Crystal John Rocha Hatboxes, tickets were in high demand.

There is no doubt that Neven is truly Ireland’s greatest chef. He wowed the audience with recipes and techniques, posed for endless photos and signed books.

"Make Every Meal a Masterpiece"

- Neven Maguire

From a very young age, one of Neven's favourite pastimes was to shadow his mother in the kitchen, watching her cook; his pastime soon became his passion, as he began experimenting with ingredients in the home kitchen at the tender age of 10, a passion that only intensified as Neven went through his teenage years. No one was surprised in 1992 when Neven enrolled in Fermanagh College, Enniskillen to study catering, where he received the prestigious Student of the Year Award. Even then, his vision was clear - to share his love and passion for food with as many people as possible.

Neven trained in some of the highest profile restaurants in the world including Roscoff, Belfast (Michelin Star winner), Grand Hotel Berlin (Michelin Star winner), The Lea Linster Luxembourg (where he cooked for Lady Diana and Tony Blair) and Arzak, San Sebastian.

In 2001, Neven took over the family business, and turned a local restaurant into a national phenomenon. Located in the rural village of Blacklion in Co. Cavan, MacNean House and Restaurant has become one of the most talked about and frequented restaurants in the country.
