The latest news from the House of Waterford Crystal....

The House of Waterford Crystal were the proud sponsors of the Good Food Ireland Awards 2012. The Awards, now it their 5th year, celebrate the excellence in food experience and reward businesses for their outstanding commitment to providing an unmatched level of service to their customers.

Over 300 guests including hoteliers, restaurateurs and artisan food producers were in attendance for the Awards, which are now a firm fixture in the food and travel awards calendar. RTÉ’s Mary Kennedy hosted the Awards Ceremony, which was also attended by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. Speaking at the Awards, Mr. Kenny said, "I am delighted to congratulate the winners of Good Food Ireland Awards 2012. Each winner showcases the unique taste and flavour of indigenous Irish foods, which is delivered with consistently high quality and our traditionally warm and friendly service to customers.”

This year’s Good Food Ireland Supreme Award went to Aniar Restaurant Galway, the newest recipient of a Michelin Star and the only Star in the West. The winners were proudly presented with the Certificate of Excellence and the magnificent Waterford Crystal piece as the main prize.

The design team at the House of Waterford Crystal have created an amazing hand-made crystal chess set.

The creation of the piece took over three months of difficult and intricate work and features the 22x22 inches crystal board. The board is cut from a solid slab of crystal and divided into individual squares, by means of wedge cutting to resemble the outlay of the chess board.

The chess board pieces themselves are sculpted out of billets of crystal and are individually designed. To differentiate between one set and the other, the tops of the figures on each side are sculpted using different techniques. Clear crystal is used to highlight the black pieces and frosted, satin-white crystal is used to depict the white pieces.

The crystal set is bordered by 2 inches of diamond cutting, separating it from the mahogany casing, which consists of three parts and is topped by the handcrafted American white oak lid. The lid is stained black to show the grain in the wood and features the House of Waterford Crystal logo, burned in and filled with silver.

The House of Waterford Crystal would like to announce that our inaugural “Waterford Crystal Moment” photographic competition has come to an end. Throughout the course of the competition we have received some truly wonderful images and great response. We would like to thank all of our participants for their effort and creativity that they displayed. The team at the House of Waterford Crystal thoroughly enjoyed your company!

The variety and the quality of works that we received was absolutely amazing, and we had a tough time selecting the five lucky winners.
