Exploring Ireland's Ancient East - Powerscourt Estate & Gardens

Located in County Wicklow, otherwise known as 'The Garden of Ireland', Powerscourt Estate and Gardens is overlooked by the beautiful Sugar Loaf mountain and surroundedby a multitude of natures finest spectacles. Powerscourt has been ranked as the 3rd best garden in the world by National Geographic and welcomes 300,000 visitors annually. Following the completion of Powerscourt House in 1741, it was praised as possessing the “massive dignity of a great Italian Renaissance villa”, but it was thegardens that really made this place special. Lush, playful and enchanting, it’s easy to spend hours wandering through the pagodas of the Japanese gardens to the wooded valleys and pet cemetery, which sits in a quiet part of the estate surrounded by roses andrhododendrons in summer. The Powerscourt Waterwall is located around 6km from the main estate. Visitors must venture through a beautiful woodland walk to reach the waterfall which is the highest in Ireland at 121m. If you’re hungry after exploring the 47 acres of garden, head back up to the house for cakes, salads and soups in the Avoca restaurant and café with views across the gardens to the Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Wicklow is truly a magical place to explore the outdoors. While in the area, why not go for a cycle along the trails of Ballinastoe Forest or if driving is more your style take in the sights while driving through the Wicklow Mountains National Park. Glendalough, a monastic settlement founded in the 6th century, is one of the most popular sites forvisitors in Wicklow. The settlement includes a round tower, churches and graveyard and is set to the natural backdrop of the magnificent Wicklow countryside.
