Thomas Francis Meagher Tricolour Celebration 2021

The Thomas Francis Meagher Tricolour Celebration is an annual event which commemorates the flying of the Irish National Flag for the first time by Waterford man Thomas Francis Meagher in his native city at the Wolf Tone Confederate Club at 33 The Mall, Waterford on March 7th 1848.

This year the event will go virtual with a series of events over the course of the weekend of the 25th, 26th and 27th June 2021. Several national and international guests and speakers, including Ambassador Dan Mulhall, Ireland’s Ambassador to America, and Vice-Admiral Mark Mellett, Chief of Staff, Irish Defence Forces, will lead a series of talks reflecting on the life and legacy of Thomas Francis Meagher. The Island of Ireland Peace Choir will present a musical celebration in honour of Meagher, and Anna Jordan will deliver a poetic tribute. On Sunday, there will be a virtual raising of the tricolour flag on The Mall.

At The Bishops Palace, you can view a number of artifacts related to Thomas Francis Meagher including a large oil on canvas portrait of Meagher in his US Army uniform and the last letter written by Meagher prior to his deportation.

The event kicks off this evening at 6pm and all events can be viewed on the Waterford In Your Pocket and Meaghers Tricolour Facebook pages, as well as being available on Youtube.
