And just over
one hours drive away, superbly set above a crossing of the River Nore, a great
Norman castle has undergone many alterations over the centuries. Excavations
in 1991-92 revealed that the original foundations on the northwest and southwest
sides truncated the bank enclosing the bailey of the pre-stone castle - indicating
that Strongbow's fort determined the basic outline of Marshall's fortress.

In the southeast, there
are a variety of formal and impressive estate gardens, which you can visit. The present
day owners and custodians are on hand and willing to discuss their work and help you
appreciate the intricacy of their unique mix of colours, shades and perfumes.

This magnificent church was founded in 1050 by the Christian Viking, Reginald
who also built the enduring tower of the same name. Today, although
it needs extensive repairs, it is regarded as the finest 18th century church in Ireland.

Waterford’s
proudest Viking architectural treasure, was erected in 1003. Today, the tower is a civic
museum, housing a magnificent collection of charters bestowed on the city by a variety
of English monarchs, together with their militaria, all in excellent condition.
