Visit the famous Lismore Castle or tour through the Viking treasure, Reginalds Museum, to appreciate the historical significance of Waterford, Ireland.
Kilkenny Castle
And just over one hours drive away, superbly set above a crossing of the River Nore, a great Norman castle has undergone many alterations over the centuries. Excavations in 1991-92 revealed that the original foundations on the northwest and southwest sides truncated the bank enclosing the bailey of the pre-stone castle - indicating that Strongbow's fort determined the basic outline of Marshall's fortress.
Gardens
In the southeast, there are a variety of formal and impressive estate gardens, which you can visit. The present day owners and custodians are on hand and willing to discuss their work and help you appreciate the intricacy of their unique mix of colours, shades and perfumes.
Christ Church Cathedral
This magnificent church was founded in 1050 by the Christian Viking, Reginald who also built the enduring tower of the same name. Today, although it needs extensive repairs, it is regarded as the finest 18th century church in Ireland.
Reginalds Tower
Waterford’s proudest Viking architectural treasure, was erected in 1003. Today, the tower is a civic museum, housing a magnificent collection of charters bestowed on the city by a variety of English monarchs, together with their militaria, all in excellent condition.
